My Greenworks Story

Greenworks was founded in 1979 to help bring plants, flowers and green life to offices and corporate buildings to improve beauty, boost staff well-being and productivity.

In the late 1980’s after completing 90 units at Santa Clara University, specializing in counseling the elderly and the terminally ill, I switched to San Jose State University to complete my Masters Degree in Gerontology - all while raising two kids and volunteering as both a certified hospice and hospital chaplain. I have always had a love for plants, as a kid, I would often be watering my parents yard or always digging up weeds and planting something. Be it pansies or tomatoes, I decided that it was a great idea to follow my passion for plants.

Finally, it was time to work towards my passion. In 1991, I did one year sweat equity and and bought the company for $12,000. At that time, Greenworks had had just one client, National Semiconductor (which was bought out by Texas Instruments in 2011 as their Silicon Valley division).

My first and only client, National Semiconductor, led to taking on 3Com, then IBM and I soon acquired numerous major tech companies and corporate offices in Silicon Valley as clients - all by word of mouth. Years later, Greenworks staff still maintain all the plant life in their corporate office in Santa Clara while I do the biophilic design work (see our Biophilic Design page for more information)! As my business grew and as word of mouth spread, I took on bigger clients such as Google, Nvidia, Netflix, and YouTube to name a few. Collaborating with top designers and leading architectural firms, did their design, installation and still handle the maintenance for their corporate headquarters.

Over this period of time, I earned several certifications in associations that I belonged to. I joined ALCA and earned their landscape professional certification, and by the 1990s I was appointed to their National Board. I joined IFMA and was elected to be their chapter President for two consecutive years in 2002 and 2003. Per client request, we have also become a WBENC Certified Woman Owned Business.

Always on the cutting edge of design and technology, we handle all plant related layouts, from floral arrangements, living green or moss walls, floor plants and even holiday plant installations. And because we love plants, we excel in all ongoing maintenance and services to all plants we’ve designed and installed to ensure they stay green and beautiful, which is why we constantly get referred to other clients as a reliable company.
